I'm always so excited for new technology but forget about the early adopter tax. Now I do like my new Windows 7 computer but I have to wait to be able to use it fully. To be fair it works better now than my Vista laptop ever did but I can't get some things to work on it. Some of the item I'm having issues with are my Blue usb mic. I still have to plug that in to a Windows XP machine to use it, just got a new firewire card reader that is not working, I spent all morning yesterday resetting my monitor profiles, and I have several Photoshop plugins that are not supported on Window 7 yet. Yet even with those issues I would still rather have it then my Vista laptop.

New ipod

If I had to think of one small piece of technology that has changed my life on a daily basis it would be the ipod nano that I got from Key Bank 2year and 10months ago. I use it almost every day even if only in the car and gym. More than just the ipod itself it has been the podcast that I listen to like all the great technology, news, photography, daily devotional, and educational podcast I've been listening to.

So now that I have become accustomed to the ease of using iTunes to download podcasts and using the iPod to listen to them my 2nd gen 2Gb Nano has stopped working. So I went out and got a new 2nd gen 8Gb iPod Touch.

I'm by no means an Apple fan boy but I think they have the best system for listen to podcasts and they make shiny toys:)

Why I'm returning my Palm Pre

I got the Palm Pre on its launch date and really had high hopes for it. I've been using Palm products for at least ten years now and have heavily used the calendars, contacts, and to do lists in them.

So here are the reasons I wanted a new phone

1. I wanted to be able to check e-mail and other quick things without booting up my PC

2. I wanted a bigger screen for photos

3. My Centro's keypad light is out

4. My Centro keeps turning on in its holster an but dialing

5. New phones are shiny and fun (I'm easily distracted by small shiny things)

6. I'm a bit of a tech geek so I thought it was time I got a real smart phone I thought I would love it

7. I wanted to be able to sync calendars with my wife

8. I wanted web access on my phone for looking up stuff on the internet

Some things I like about the Palm Pre

1. Pandora works great on the phone for streaming internet radio

2. I can use the Calendar with Google to sync my calendar with my wife’s

3. It has a nice camera for a phone

4. Not too bad of a web experience

5. It can run multiple things at once

6. It has a regular headphone jack for using it as an MP3 player

The reasons I can't live with the Pre any longer

1. The battery life is so short I can’t use all the cool stuff and still be able to make calls

2. Reception for the phone is worse than my old phone

2. Voice quality for the people I'm calling is worse than my old phone

3. The Calendar is really slow and hard to move around in.

4. Even though it is a Palm device it only copied over some of my info from my Centro

5. It requires two hands to do anything and it is uncomfortable to work that way

6. The OS feels more like a Mac than a PC in that you can't customize anything like you could in the old palm devices

7. The Calendar only shows part of a day at a time, you have to scroll down to see the rest of the events in a day or just to see if there is nothing. This makes it hard and time consuming just to see what I have planned for the next day. I could go on about how terrible the calendar is let just say it's really bad and an embarrassment to the Palm name

8. The to do list is also an embarrassment to the Palm name, don't even get me started on how bad it is.

9. Doing anything in the phone is slow and time consuming

10. The screen looks great when it's on but gets smears and looks really dirty when it's off.

11. My wife does not like the phone so if she’s taking hers back we can't sync calendars which was one of the reasons I wanted this phone

12. It is really dangerous to use on the road because you have to look at it and everything takes a while to load. (not that I ever use my phone while driving)

13. When you get a call you can't easily see who is calling until you answer it

14. It is really slow just to move between apps like my phone and calendar

15. There are not enough hard buttons like a nav bar for going up and down or side to side

16. It's not a cheap phone and it has proprietary power connections

17. It's a pain to get at the power plug in (that you have to use all day)

18. It does not have an easy way to move multiple photos to and from the device

19. There is no backup on my PC that makes me just a bit uncomfortable. With the way it constantly syncs stuff if one entry gets corrupted or inadvertantly delegated you could lose it forever

20. I realize that I'm sure I'm wrong about some of this stuff and there may to some hack or way around it but it is not user friendly in that I could not find it in a week with the phone. These are just my personal observations and experiences.

I could go on but I think that's enough

The Palm Pre does some cool stuff but it is awful the basic stuff I used my old Palm Centro for, making calls, quickly looking at my calendar, using the to do lists. Although this phone may be great for someone else it just does not work for me.

Just another use for Pocket Wizards!

For this shot I had a Canon 580 EX II covered with a blue gel triggered with a Pocket Wizard by the feet of the band pointing towards me, then I just had to wait durring their dance untill one of them was directly in front of the flash.

Shot with a Canon 40D at ISO 640 F 4.0 1/80th of a second 26mm on a 17-4omm rented L series lens (from DODD Camera) edited in Lightroom 2.0 and Photoshop CS3 for noise and contrast

Brushfire in North Royalton

Here is a photo from my cell phone of the brush fire in North Royalton. At least 6 acers were burned. The ground was covered with dry dead leaves and with the high winds the fire spread quickly along the ground. All the surrounding strctures were protected just had some melted siding and a scorched corrners

This was the first time I have really used my Pocket Wizards at range while having them completely out of view. I set up two 580ex II with my new LumiQuest FXtras set with sky blue gels on the floor of the bus to light up the interior and with a blue glow. I also used a Gary Fong Lightphere
on one of the lights just to spread it out a bit.

Hinckley Fire Dept. along with about 9 other fire departments were called in to help on this fire today. I was on Engine 31, the 3rd engine on scene. We ending up having our engine as one of the main supply pumpers at the street while our crew (Carl, Jared, and myself) worked to stop the fire at the middle of the building. About half of the storage units were saved while the first half of the building was destroyed.

I when out in Hinckley this evening when I saw a storm rolling in I did not have much time before the rain started pounding down but I was able to get this shot first.

House Fire in Hinckley

While at my parents house in N. Royalton for Isaac's birthday (happy birthday Isaac) my pager when off for a possible house fire with an open phone line on Ridge Rd near the Royalton border. Dropping the X-Box controller I took off in my car. When I arrived the owner and her dog were already safely out of the house with some help from the PD, the kitchen and living room were already well involved. Thanks to the quick response of the Hinckley Fire Dept, and other mutual aid companies we were able to quickly stop the fire and save a good portion of the house. Although there was smoke damage throughout the house only the kitchen, living, and dinning room were burned. I was even able to save a basket of photo albums from from the living room.
According the the homeowner she was frying something in grease left to answer the phone when she came back the kitchen was on fire. She tried to put it out with a towel, the fire quickly spread to the living room curtains. She then called 911 and was only able to get out that her house was on fire and had to leave.

About a year and a half ago I got a free iPod Nano from Key Bank and I have been using in ever since. I don't really have any music on it but I listen to quite a few podcast (Internet downloadable radio shows) on it. I have also started to get video podcasts that I watch on my computer with iTunes. For some reason I have been getting an error "error 5000" when iTunes tries to download new shows for the last week. So I'm going to try reinstalling itunes and just in case I loose my podcast subscriptions I have them here.

How much of a pain is it to sign in?

So the photo hosting service that I have been using is called Phanfare. I have really liked them they not only have a great price but I really like the slide show option with the ability to add my own music, but they are changing to more of a social network than just a paid hosting site. I understand that they have to do it. The company had not been growing and with the sale of lifetime memberships to people like me they will not make any money off me again. This becomes a problem when the initial money runs out. So to make a long story short in order to see my photos you may have to sign in to Phanfare. They will make you sign up for a free account with one Gig of storage space. I have not seen a 2.0 Phanfare site yet but there will me some minor changes to the way it looks and I may not be able to keep my url it will redirect you to .phanfare.com. I really feel that this a major departure from there original mission statement but I guess if it is necessary to keep the service alive for years to come I should be grateful that I got in on the ground floor and have a lifetime membership with unlimited photo storage.
OK so I'm not really making the story any shorter but in conclusion it sounds like there is a way to get around having to log in to see my main directory page but it would require a bit of work on my end, so I leave it up to you the three people that read this blog, who are the same three that care to look at my photos how much of a pain is it to log in?
Please put you two cents in, and in you get all your friends to put two cents in maybe I can start my own pyramid scheme! Get on board now!
But seriously I want to know what your thoughts are.

Monk Season 5

I just got back in from going to pick up Monk Season 5 on DVD from the N. Royalton library on my bike. It is nice to be able to get back out again even if I did get wet and muddy. Only in Cleveland can I be fighting a blizzard on my way to a car accident one day and taking a bike ride in a short sleeve t-shirt less than a week away!

Here is a image of a car accident last week. I took it with my New Palm Centro, it's not a great camera but it helps to be able to show the ER staff how bad the car was dammaged.

Backpacking Trip

I have some new photos up on Photos.CalebSchuster.com from the W.V.C.C. Men’s Backpacking trip. We went to Blackwell PA for three days. The first day was a brutal hike up the side of a mountain. There was a nice view and not another camper around for miles. Once we started setting up our tents for the night we realized we had forgotten one tent, no wonder he was going so fast! Josh and I spent the night in a shelter half made out of and extra tarp. The weather held and we stayed dry. The second day we went back down the mountain to get the tent and went swimming in the river. For our second night we camped next to the river in a pine forest. I took a lot of pictures and had a great time.

Beachwood House Fire

Beachwood called us for a squad, but we still got to take down some walls and help with overhaul and salvage. All we had was a cell phone camera, I still don't have a camera for my turnout gear. I'm looking at a waterproof Olympus Stylus 720 SW underwater camera, waterproof camera, shockproof camera but it is still way to expensive.

But hey look they can have a great sun room on the second floor!

The Astronaut Farmer

I’m tried and going to bed but I just got back from seeing The Astronaut Farmer. My parents got some premiere tickets and invited me to come along. What a great movie with rich full characters that shows the importance of dreams and family. It’s is nice to be able to recommend a movie for families to go see. This movie is safe and interesting for the whole family. So If your looking for something to see take a look at The Astronaut Farmer, It’s a lot better than it sounds.

The End of Winter

Well not really but it is a nice thought anyway. I was sitting at my computer just now when this robin flew right up to the patio door. Surprisingly he stayed long enough for my to get my camera and snap a quick shot of him. I’m working on backing up one of my latest finds. I have been searching for a copy of Family Portraits for over eight months before one of my ebay alerts paid off. No one else even bid on it and I got the full original 13 episodes. Before Focus on the Family started Adventures in Odyssey they ran a test series of these 13 shows on a series of Monday broadcasts in place of their normal programming back in 1987. I have been listening ever since then I have been listening to them on Saturday mornings and colleting their audio tape albums. Between time almost 20 years more than a few tape players that liked to eat tapes I lost a few of the tape. I contacted Focus on the Family and they no longer sold the tapes, and because of the age I could not find them anywhere I even went to several dealers that specialized in old books and tapes. They finally showed up on ebay and I got them for only $8! These Dramas really meant a lot to me I grew up with them, listening to them now brings back memories. I remember never sleeping in on the weekends just so I could be beside the radio for the start of Ranger Bill and Adventures in Odyssey. I think that in a big way these dramas and the messages that they convey have helped to form the values that I have today.

If anyone has or knows anyone who might have the original first Adventures in Odyssey album Odyssey USA please let me know. This in no longer being made and three of the episodes were never remade or rereleased. Thanks

New Phone

Nextel came out with two dual band phones, just in time. I previously had a Nextel i530 that was just about indestructible. That was the phone that if you look back in the beginning of my blog I talked about driving over it with my car! After having it for about two year is started to deteriorate which sadly is not uncommon for a cell phone at that age. The direct connect button no longer worked and the phone started just shutting down for no reason in the middle of calls, at that point it was time to get a new phone. When Sprint first bought Nextel my first question was when are they going to make a phone that can use both Sprint and Nextel cell phone towers. As of about a week ago Nextel just came out with two hybrid phones. The model that I have the ic402 retails for over $230 with my two years of not buying a phone I had a $150 credit towards a new phone and I got a $40 mail in rebate. When I bought the phone I was told that Nextel no longer would let me use my 15% civil service/military discount on new phones, this sounded strange to me but I needed a new phone so I bought it anyways. The next day I called Nextel Customer Support and asked them about it and they told me that I should have gotten my discount even on a new phone. With this information in hand I went back to the Sprint store in Brunswick and told them that I should have gotten my discount, they were not happy and said that I was wrong but after offering to return my phone and go elsewhere to get my discount of $12 they ended up giving me a car charger that retails for $22. So in the end the customer (me) who is always right got a new phone with no dead spots found so far for about $20:)

Gabe's Account of the Evening
Our game was Sunday night at ten o’clock, on field 3. Two of our varsity players were missing, Colby and Cameron; so I played for the team and so did Aaron and Josh Schlea. Coach Plummer had our first line up as Pat B., Dan B., Jacob P., Chris Giermann, Brandon, and Pierce B. as goalie. In the first 3 minutes Dan B. scored an awesome goal. We got up a few more goals and then they scored a couple, by the end of the first half it was 9-3. As you can imagine we weren’t concerned about them catching back up to us. But we still played with the same intensity as in the first half. In about five minutes into the second half Josh S. scored a goal and in under a minute he scored another goal! With every goal the crowed cheered loudly, and even with every new line up the crowed cheered for us. Later in the second half I scored a goal, it was one of my sliding on the ground while kicking the ball. I can’t seem to stand up while shooting, it’s just my style. With most teams when you get 7 or more goals ahead they usually stop playing hard and let the balls roll in, but this team played hard even up to the last few seconds of the game. The ending score was close to 16-3.

One of my new tech toys from 2006

I got a few new tech toys last year the most significant new item that I got last year was my Canon 10D but I would like to talk today about something that I now carry with me just about everywhere. The iPod Nano that I have had for a few months now, has become indispensable to me. I listen to it in the car with my Belkin II FM transmitter, I listen to it while shopping, while working outside, cleaning, and it is a must have when I go to the gym to work out. Unlike most iPod users I have no music at all on my 2G of audio storage. Over the last few months I have been collecting podcasts to listen to. My Nano has proven to be quite resilient I have drop tested it many times, it has proven to be rain resistant, and has not been damaged by carrying it around in my pocket with no case, it still looks good and functions perfectly even with the rough use that I have put it through.
Podcast are a lot of fun and can be a great learning tool as well as a way to keep up with current events around the world or just on a specific interest. You do not need an iPod to listen to podcasts, you can use iTunes or a similar program to retrieve your favorite radio shows to listen to at your leisure.

A look back at some of the things that happened in 2006

I quit my first job as a paramedic and started working for AMR. I went from a company that could not keep 7 employees to the countries largest private EMS provider
Went to Fort McCoy Wisconsin for two weeks for an Army leadership course. It took over 16 hours with flight layovers and delays, (we should have just driven the eight hours up there but it’s the Army)

Got a real camera! My Cannon 10D

Celebrated one year of marriage with my lovely wife, in Berlin Ohio at Donna’s Premier Lodging! Great place I would highly recommend it.
Got out of the Army National Guard Oct 13, fulfilling my six-year commitment. I still have two years of inactive service.

Finished my Associates Degree in Emergency Medical Technology and for the time being I’m done with school, and it feels great to not have any class work hanging over my head to be done.

Started with University Heights Fire Department. After eight years of working towards a full time position on a fire department, I now have a full time job as a career firefighter!

Just two days ago Chief Pitchler called me while I was in Biology lab to let me know that I have a date to start now! December 18th . I will continue to be on A shift, which is the same three day rotation that I have been on for the last year. I have a shirt that I believe states it best,

I picked up some foam boards from Office Max to use as photographic light reflectors. Nilla (Crystal Bear) made a nice subject. I also picked up some black fabric to use as a background. The white background was just two of the boards that worked great to more evenly light the subject with soft light.

I got Jasmine to stand there for enough time for this quick shot before she ran off. But the reflector on the floor really helped to light her eyes up. In fact if you look closely you can see the rectangle shape reflected in her eyes.

Civic Activism

Although I have voted before, this years Election Day has meant a lot more to me personally than they have in the past. Issue 153 in University Heights was a tax levy that has now raised the income tax of those who work in the city from 1.5% to 2.5%. The city was threatening to make cuts in the police, fire, and city service departments if this did not pass which would have meant not hiring me. Even though most if not all of the guys on UH live outside the city and will have their taxes raised by this increase, they were out at the polls standing with signs and handing out pamphlets all day. After I voted in Medina County I went out to stand with them and I was out at the polls for a few hours in the rain helping remind the good citizens of UH to vote to keep there fire and police and service departments funded.
The unofficial word is that I will be able to start with UH FD some time in January 07!

I Got a New Free Toy!

It finally arrived today! I opened a Key Bank account less than two months ago only because I wanted an IPod Nano. Although I would not go out and spend $149 to get one free sounded good. I saw the billboard ads and called while at work one day to find out what the catch was, and if they were really still giving away IPods. I had to set up a direct deposit or credit card, have $50 in an account to open a checking account, and now I have a new 2GB Nano. It will be nice to have an IPod. I have had my LifeDrive for about two years but it is to big to easily carry when working out. This Nano is so small I could probably put it in my wallet! It is kind of my late birthday gift, scince my 23rd birthday was only the 9th. It has been really busy with work, weddings, and school, along with the rest of life. I will have more weekends now. Friday Oct 13th 2000 was my enlistment date and Friday Oct 13th 2006 was my last day in the Army. I will no longer have to go away for one weekend a month or two weeks a year in the summer. It is quite freeing to not have the Guard as part of my life anymore. I have to remind myself that I'm not in any more. Someone asked my yesterday if I was in the military and I started to tell them that I was in the National Guard and had to correct myself and tell them that I was in the National Guard.
In any case I look forward to using my IPod at Bally's this week.

Missing Medina County woman found

A 79-year-old woman missing for nearly two days has been located.
Norma Becker had walked away from her Granger Township home early Monday. Police, neighbors, friends, and family had searched a mile square area since then.Late Tuesday afternoon, Norma was found on a neighbor's porch on Beach Road, about a mile from her home. Paramedics were evaluating her, but she appeared to be in good shape.The great-grandmother had walked away from her home on previous occasions, and may have a form of dementia.Her 83-year-old husband Charlie says Norma's behavior had changed. "She was a very pleasant woman," Mr. Becker told Channel 3 News. "Now she's afraid of people. Doesn't want to go where a group is."Searchers said their day and a half of work was difficult, but well worth it.

My Fire Department pager went off at about 6:30 this morning for a mutual aid call to Granger to help with a search for a missing person. I quickly got dressed and thankfully had the foresight to grab my waterproof Bellville Gortex boots instead of my usual New Balance all terrain running shoe. Hinckley, Granger, Wellsville, Sharon, The Red Cross, Medina County Sheriffs Dept. with 6 inmates to help search, The Ohio State Patrol, as well as the park rangers among others showed up to help. One of the Medina County Firefighters even brought out his ultra light powered Parachute That was a great help in the search. It was really cool and looked like it would be a lot of fun to fly or ride in.

I spent most of my day fighting my way through heavy brush and wild thorn bushes, at times having to crawl for 200yds at a time to search the extensive woods behind the Becker’s home. It took us about 4 hours to search just the one square mile of woods behind their home.
During one of the points where I was crawling through the brush my radio worked it’s way off my belt and fell to the ground. Once I stood up I realized that I did not have my radio, at the time we had to keep moving so I could not go back for it right away. A few hours later A family member who was helping with his quad was kind enough to give me a lift to go back to the place where I had lost it. I was thinking that I would be able to hear the radio traffic and find it quickly, no such luck. I had a good idea where I must have left it behind and proceeded to crawl back and forth under the brush. At this point I started praying that I would be able to find it and not have to pay for a new one. (I don’t even want to know what a new one would cost) I continued to search and almost lost my pager and phone clip! Because I was moving fast and often keying the mic on the radio that I had, my phone clip popped off and I had to go back 20ft or so to find it, and my pager almost fell off my belt! Just as I was about to give up, I could not hear anything from my radio, I started to head back to the quad on what I thought was very close to my original path. I stumbled right over my radio! It was upside down and I almost went right over it. (apparently I was RIGHT ON my original path). Thank God I found it. I quickly found out that the reason that I could not hear it was that when it fell off the channel had been changed.
I spent the rest of the day searching up and down some nearby roads where she was spotted at 3pm today. We left at about 5pm while other stayed to follow up any new information or leads that came in. I just found out that she had been found about an hour ago by using a Google search.

Seize the Fish

While waiting in an office today I took this picture of this plecostomus swimming around eating. The plecostomus has always been one of my favorite aquarium fish. The have a very interesting pattern of spots and an almost prehistoric fin. The pleco for short is a great friendly fish to have; they are not aggressive and do a good job helping keep the tank clean:)

My Last Drill

Last weekend was my last drill with the National Guard. I have served my six years, I still have two years of inactive reserve, where I could be called up in an major event such as in the call ups after 9-11. My last drill was at Camp Perry in Port Clinton Ohio where we trained for civil disturbances. I had already turned in my gear so I spent my weekend taking pictures. I took this picture at National Guard drill last month. My platoon was sitting outside having a class on different weapons systems when this deer walked out of the woods. I quickly switched over to my telephoto lens and was able to get some nice pictures before she ran back off into the woods.

Riot Training

This month my Guard unit trained for civil disturbances.
Since I will be getting out of the Army Oct. 13th I was able to turn my gear in this month. Because I had no gear I spent most of my day watching the training and taking pictures.I’m almost out it will be nice to not have one of my weekends taken up with the Guard anymore. I served my country and got out of the Army everything I could have wanted. I got my civil service bonus points for getting on a fire department, I made the rank of Sergeant, I have something like 15 different awards and medals, although my unit did not want to do the paper work to put my Bronze Star through I was put in for one, and I got to serve in the major conflict of my age coming home physically and mentally in one piece.

Double Reds

I when to give blood yesterday and found out about the Red Cross’s Double red program. I was able to give two units of red blood cells and get all my plasma back. I got hooked up to a machine almost like a mini dialysis machine. It takes out a unit of blood separates the plasma from the red blood cells then returns the plasma through the same needle. It does this twice. It also gives you a unit of saline so you leave more hydrated than you came in, oh and did I mention that it uses a smaller needle that whole blood donation. Now instead of giving every 56 days I have to wait 112 to give again. It was cold receiving the fluids back through the IV after cooling below body temperature.For a list of when the red cross will be having a blood drive in your area check the Red Cross web site at www.redcrossdonor.org/events.asp and if you would like to give two units at once look for Double Reds available.

The Union

The latest with the job in UH is that the union is fighting for me. Before I left my job with AMR I had a what they call a conditional offer of employment. I was told that I would start Sunday as long as they got the passing paperwork back from my physical and psych test. Something similar happened in Cleveland Heights FD a while back and the applicant took the city to court and got a job; that is not the way I want to get hired on. Taking your future employer to court is a great way to not make it through your probationary period, and get black listed from all area fire depts.. The union is meeting with the mayor and the city finance officer Friday and we will see what happens.
I have never been part of a union before, but I have to say it is really cool that they are fighting for me when I am not even in the union yet. I used to think of unions as those people that picket in front of Wal-Mart or steel worker on strike for a living wage. So far I really like this union.

A "Real" Camera

I just recently got a Canon 10D digital SLR
The single-lens reflex (SLR) is a type of camera that uses a movable mirror placed between the lens and the film to project the image seen through the lens to a matte focusing screen. Most SLRs use a roof pentaprism or pentamirror to observe the image via an eyepiece. It is a big step up from my HP Photosmart 945. I can now use a wide variety of lenses, flashes and other accessory's.

Thank to Papa Jim who is upgrading I got a great deal on this camera with a 26-100mm and 100-300mm Canon zoom lenses as well as a 1Gb card that stores about 310 6MP pictures. With Canon's anti noise filters pictures are more detailed and crisper than those of a pocket size 6MP camera.
